How the right hygiene products tackle the spread of viruses

Regardless of the industry you operate in, professional hygiene products effectively reduce the risk of harm from bacteria and viruses spreading. From hand sanitiser to toilet paper, businesses have a responsibility to ensure that adequate hygiene measures are in place to safeguard staff and customers.

However, using hygiene products is one thing. There is an abundance of cleaning products out there to choose from, with some proving to be way more effective than others. Assessing which products you need and which are better than others can be time-consuming and costly, especially if you try different options before settling on a preference. That’s why In this blog, we detail how you can find essential products to tackle the spread of viruses and tips on keeping your business safe.

Hygiene products for every part of your business

Detergents and disinfectants

When you need in-depth cleaning, it may be necessary to use a detergent and a disinfectant. And while detergents and disinfectants may seem like they perform the same function, which is to provide an effective cleaning solution and whilst both do, they serve different purposes.

Commercial cleaning chemicals are used to clean down a surface and remove grease. Whether you need floor cleaners and polishes or heavy-duty degreasers for commercial applications, the right chemical will help you keep surfaces clean. Paired with the right disinfectant, you will be able to tackle bacteria and viruses.

Choosing the right disinfectant

When choosing a disinfectant product, the usefulness of the product will depend on the environment in which it is applied. Be sure to check if your disinfectant of choice passes the EN 1276 - suspension test to establish whether a chemical disinfectant or antiseptic has bactericidal activity (EN 1276).

The EN 1276 standard is applicable to products used in food, industrial, domestic, and institutional settings. It does not apply to products used on living tissues, with the exception of hand sanitisers (such as hydroalcoholic gels) in these settings or to locations where disinfection is medically indicated.

Products such as the Evans Protect Disinfectant cleaner or the Apple Fresh disinfectant are both EN 1276 accredited. They provide lots of versatility for where they can be applied, as they are ideal for use on floors, walls, tiles or a variety of hard surfaces, perfect for any establishment.

Soaps, and sanitising hand gels

In the wake of the pandemic, hand gels have become a staple of everyday life for many of us, and they are among the most effective hygiene solutions you can use. A sanitising gel is often used as a replacement for soap and water, as they are effective for cleaning hands, especially when outdoors or travelling.

Alcohol hand gels are the most common and effective for killing bacteria and preventing the spread of viruses. Government guidelines recommend that hand gels should have a minimum alcohol concentration of 60%. Sanitising gel without alcohol is not as effective at killing germs as those that do.

There are some arguments that the use of hand sanitisers may lead to antibacterial resistance, but there are no conclusive studies to prove this. However, if you perceive the effectiveness of hand gels, ensuring you have a high-quality antibacterial hand soap that provides skin protection and a sterile alcohol sand sanitiser in any establishment is essential.

Paper towels and hygiene roll

No cleaning can be completed without a hand towel or hygiene roll to effectively clean surfaces, remove bacteria and prevent the spread of viruses. Hygiene rolls are an easy, affordable solution and should be a mainstay of any establishment. The  blue hygiene roll is a popular choice that ensures clean surfaces and effective absorption. Using this product will effectively wipe surfaces and swiftly remove any spillages. It is a vital component for any type of cleaning!

What’s more, hand towels are an essential time as well. While air-dryers are becoming more popular due to their cost-effectiveness, Mayo Clinic Proceedings  say that from a hygiene viewpoint, hand towels are superior to air-dryers.

Waste management

It’s no surprise that controlling waste helps you keep the highest hygiene standards. To keep your spaces clean, you need to successfully separate, control and dispose of your waste flow. Especially when it comes to healthcare facilities, clinical waste contaminated with chemicals or pharmaceutical and medicinal wastes needs the proper management with the clinical bin bags which adhere to global standards.

But even if you’re not operating a healthcare facility, waste management is essential. White and coloured bin liners are a way of hygienically collecting rubbish. Plus, they are lightweight and tear-resistant, guaranteeing safety.

Effective tips for keeping facilities clean

For any establishment, hygiene is important, but to maintain good hygiene standards, this must start with effective and thorough cleaning on a daily basis. Devise a cleaning schedule or checklist that highlights all areas that need to be cleaned and tick them off as you go. A list is also effective for all staff members so that everyone is aware of what duties they need to perform.

Your checklist will depend on the environment you are working in, but ordinarily, your cleaning checklist should contain the following:

- All hygiene products for disinfection should adhere to BS EN requirements. Look for the BS EN 1276 or BS EN 13697 codes on product labels when ordering.
- Ensure you have the correct hygiene products. Carry out due diligence and make sure you are always stocked with high-quality products to perform the cleaning functions your business needs.
- If you are handling food, clean and disinfect the surfaces, equipment and kitchen areas sufficiently as often as possible.
- Dispose of any food waste safely and appropriately.
- Create a list of cleaning duties to ensure your cleaning is carried out efficiently and to minimise waste or improper use of any cleaning products and equipment.
- Use disposable gloves and aprons to maintain excellent hygiene safety standards.
