7 effective methods for dust control
Cleaning is a continuous process, regardless of if you’re at home or work, the need to keep things clean, fresh and tidy is obviously a necessity. Regardless of how much - or how little - you may perform cleaning duties, the hardest aspect to combat and maintain is dust control.
Dust gathers regardless of how much cleaning is done, because of the nature of how it is formed, with various microbes and particles emanating from pollen, mould, hair, dead skin cells, and fabric fibres. Airborne dust can seem ever-present, so how can this be combatted?
Well, you’ll always have to regularly dust and polish surfaces, particularly if you or anybody you live with suffers from asthma or any allergies. Check out our guide to the best tips and dusting tools you’ll need to ensure your house remains dust-free as often as possible.
1) Invest in effective air filters
Air filters are effective for trapping dust particles, but ensure you invest in a filter that can trap smaller airborne particles as well as larger ones. If dust is a persistent problem, you may want to consider investing in an air purifier.
Depending on your needs, you can invest in different models. If your house gets sun from one side predominantly, then the rooms that are facing towards the sun are likely to accumulate more dust. Aside from whole-house units, there are portable sized purifiers designed to eradicate dust from single rooms available to purchase. Ordinarily, these operate a fan circulation system that captures dust and pollutants effectively.
2) Wash and change your bedding weekly
Washing and changing bedding frequently is a big plus for combatting dust particles. Fibres from bed linen already contribute towards dust, but as you sleep, dead skin cells tend to be collected by bedding, which exacerbates the amount of dust.
By simply washing and changing your bedding regularly, including cushions, pillows and any mattress protectors or blankets, will help to minimise the level of dust within the bedroom, which is an obvious plus point to aid better sleeping and breathing in better quality air.
3) Invest in high-reach dusting tools
Dust control can only be effectively managed if you are using the best equipment both appropriately and correctly. Often, dust is found in places that are inaccessible to reach, such as corners of ceilings, behind radiators or underneath sofas, you’ll need an effective high-reach dusting tool that can be used to access all those awkward places.
Here is a selection of the most effective dusting tools you can find on the market, enabling you to minimise the level of dust in your home.
Cobweb brush
Aside from its namesake, a cobweb brush electrostatically cleans all surfaces, including walls, ceilings, and window screens. Window screen dust and cobwebs are removed by the gentle bristles and contoured form. Compatible extension poles are firmly attached by a threaded handle. For cleaning high corners and crown moulding, bristles are ideal. They have durable synthetic fibre bristles with a strong steel wire frame, and can be used with an interchangeable handle.
Lambswool duster
Equally popular is the lambswool duster, which also contains fibres used to capture dust effectively. The fibres and lanolin present allows for static electricity to be created, which is supremely effective in capturing dust. Kitted with an extension handle, you can use this product to reach high areas and other fiddly places. Upon purchase, be sure to check the washable requirements for this product, as they can vary.
Flexi duster frame
The flexi duster frame is another high-reach dusting tool that is super effective for dusting tight corners and confined spaces such as behind radiators. Use this product most effectively with the Red Flexi Duster Sleeve or the Disposable Flexi Duster Sleeves. With its removable launderable sleeve or disposable sleeve and handheld or interchangeable handles, the flexi duster offers multiple usage methods.
4) Damp mopping hard surfaces
90% of the dust in your home can be removed with a thorough damp mopping and dusting, and water is about the most environmentally friendly cleaner you can find. Dust can be collected and held in place with a damp rag or mop before being easily rinsed.
For efficient smear-free mopping, look at products such as the rapid mop, a super-light microfibre mop, offering controllable moisture that will eradicate dust particles present amongst any hard surfaces, such as kitchen or bathroom floor surfaces.
5) Vacuum and sweep regularly and thoroughly
Thoroughly vacuuming and sweeping surfaces on a weekly basis or even more frequently will eliminate dust effectively. Sweeping surfaces sufficiently may require more frequent attentive care, and products like a complete sweeper are quick and easy to use. Going over hard surfaces on a frequent basis will provide exceptional dust control.
A smaller, handheld dustpan and brush is also useful for cleaning floor and worktop surfaces that are tight, providing efficiency and reliability.
Equally, think about other areas of your home that could be vacuumed, such as your sofa or curtains? These areas accumulate dust easily, particularly from sunlight and the presence of soft fibres in the material. Steam cleaning or dry vacuuming these areas when carrying out your cleaning duties is an excellent way of minimising dust in your home.
6) Clearing any cluttered areas
The cliche of items sat gathering dust is very much true, and if your home is cluttered with items, ornaments or other inanimate objects that don’t provide much use to your everyday decor, then maybe it’s time to relocate or remove some of the items that take up extra room and contribute to the collection of dust in your home.
Bookcases, desks, mantelpieces, and window sills can become cluttered inadvertently. Keep them clutter-free and also frequently dusted, with the use of effective microfibre cloths. They can be used for removing dust and loose particles from all hard surfaces by creating a static charge that attracts dirt to the cloth.
7) Manage secondary dust sources
Pets are a mainstay of millions of households, but they can also contribute to dust particles, as dead skin cells, hair and other debris is attracted to their fur. Grooming pets regularly can help limit the amount of dust they generate, but eradicating dust is almost impossible if you have pets in your home.
Doormats and rugs are effective in collecting dust when people enter and exit the household, so having a doormat outside and a rug or doormat inside, either side of your front or back doors can help when people exit or when you need to dry off any mud or debris from the fur of your dog after a long walk.
